El Consejo Europeo de Investigación ha asignado unos 19,3 millones de dólares para el proyecto Black Hole Cam, cuyo objetivo es estudiar y sacar imágenes de un agujero negro en el centro de la Vía Láctea.
“La mayoría de los astrofísicos creen que los agujeros negros existen, pero nadie ha visto uno”, dice Heino Falcke, uno de los principales investigadores del proyecto. El problema es que la gravedad de los agujeros negros es tan fuerte que la luz no puede abandonarla, así que no es posible observarlo visualmente.
Sin embargo, las tecnologías modernas podrían permitir obtener imágenes fotografiando el horizonte de sucesos, es decir, la teórica frontera del agujero negro que una vez se cruza nada, ni siquiera la luz, puede abandonarlo. Al caer luz en el agujero negro, se calienta y brilla, dibujando la silueta del agujero.
La existencia del horizonte de sucesos es la prueba de la existencia del mismo agujero negro, señaló Falcke. “Por fin tenemos la oportunidad de estudiar la gravedad de una manera que hasta ahora era ciencia ficción, será un punto de cambio en la ciencia moderna”, añadió.
