Al momento, este sector no tiene líder, ya que compañías como Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Volvo y Tesla, entre otras, se encuentran a la mitad del desarrollo de estos vehículos y apenas son prototipos que aparecen en ferias de tecnología.
Sin embargo, considerando que este mercado llegará a tener un valor de poco más de 25,000 millones de dólares (mdd) hacia 2020, según analistas de Exane BNP Paribas, ellos mismos indican que será hasta 2025 y 2030 cuando habrá un verdadero mercado por temas regulatorios.
Para Apple, esto significa entrar a una industria nueva y tendría que pagar un ‘derecho de piso’, consideró el analista especialista en tecnologías de la información, José Carlos Méndez.
“No es lo mismo inventar categorías a tener que competir con rivales que vienen haciendo esto hace más de 100 años; también el retorno (de inversión) en esa industria es lento y hay varias trabas de manufactura y comercialización que no es lo mismo que un teléfono o una computadora”, dijo Méndez, en entrevista.
Sobre este tema, quien fuera CEO de General Motors, Dan Akerson, dijo en una entrevista con Bloomberg este miércoles, que “Apple no sabe en lo que se estaría metiendo (al entrar a la industria automotriz)”.
Ésta no es la primera vez que un directivo critica las intenciones de Apple. Cabe recordar que figuras como el ex CEO de Microsoft, Steve Ballmer dijo que el iPhone sería un fracaso en ventas por su alto precio o el ex CEO de Dell, Michael Dell, quien dijo que Apple estaba acabada en 1987 y que sería mejor regresar el dinero a los accionistas.
Por el lado positivo, el analista dice que si existe una compañía tecnológica que podría dar el salto a la industria automotriz sería Apple, ya que tiene tres detalles clave: diseño, equipo y flujo de efectivo.
“Quien pudiera ser la otra compañía tecnológica que podría realizar cosas con autos sería Google, pero ellos no son tan buenos haciendo diseño de hardware, así que Apple también lleva la delantera.”
Estos son cinco puntos por los cuales este proyecto que, según The Wall Street Journal tiene el nombre código de Titán, podría ser la apuesta de Apple en un futuro:
