Una Corte de Distrito de Estados Unidos rechazó este martes suspender la ejecución del mexicano Édgar Tamayo Arias, prevista para este miércoles en Texas, lo que reduce las posibilidades de la defensa de frenar la condena.
“El Tribunal de Distrito de Estados Unidos para el Distrito Oeste de Texas rechazó la petición del ciudadano mexicano Édgar Tamayo de una orden de restricción temporal”, informaron las abogadas Sandra Babcock y Maurie Levin en un comunicado.
“Estamos profundamente decepcionadas por la decisión de la Corte hoy, pero vamos a seguir luchando por el derecho de Édgar a la revisión de su caso”, agregaron las juristas, que aún pueden apelar a que el gobernador Rick Perry frene la ejecución.
Perry, sin embargo, ha rechazado las peticiones anteriores.
La defensa buscaba que los tribunales ordenaran al gobierno de Texas suspender la condena hasta que el caso sea revisado, argumentando que Tamayo no tuvo un juicio justo porque no recibió asistencia consular inmediata ni se tomó en cuenta que padece retraso mental leve.
Tamayo, de 46 años, fue condenado en 1994 por el asesinato de un policía. Su ejecución está programada para las 18:00 horas de este miércoles (hora local).
