El accidente se produjo cerca de la ciudad de Goma, la capital de la provincia de Kivu Norte. De acuerdo con la agencia de noticias, unos 36 pasajeros viajaban a bordo del avión.
Ya se han retiraron cinco cuerpos de la aeronave, que quedó completamente destruida, indicó el sitio web de la emisora de radio local Radio Okapi. Según ese mismo medio, el accidente tuvo lugar mientras el avión, supuestamente un Fokker 50 de la aerolínea congoleña Compagnie Africaine d’Aviation (CAA), realizaba la maniobra de aterrizaje.
Los primeros datos recogidos en el lugar del siniestro indican que se trata de una aeronave que partió de la ciudad de Lodja, en la provincia congoleña de Kasai-Oriental, rumbo a Goma.
El siniestro se produjo en una zona residencial de Goma, al lado del lago Kivu y cerca de la sede de la Comisión Electoral y la Dirección General de Migración.
La República Democrática del Congo ocupa uno de los últimos puestos del mundo en materia de seguridad aérea. El pasado mes de diciembre unas 30 personas perdieron la vida en otro accidente de aviación ocurrido en el aeropuerto de la capital del país, Brazzaville, y en julio de 2011 se estrelló un avión de pasajeros en la ciudad de Kisangani, en un siniestro que provocó más de 120 víctimas mortales.
