El equipo de científicos de la Universidad de Misuri (EE.UU.) que ha desarrollado esta nueva terapia ha explicado que la han probado en ratones con un “éxito arrollador”.
Desde los años 30, los científicos han estado intentando curar el cáncer con un tratamiento por captura neutrónica de boro. “Nuestro equipo finalmente encontró la manera de hacer que este tipo de captura funcionara aprovechando la biología de una célula cancerosa tratada con nanoquímica”, dijo Hawthorne, director del equipo.
Las células cancerosas crecen más rápido que las células sanas y durante el proceso de crecimiento absorben más material que estas. El equipo de Hawthorne aprovechó esta circunstancia para hacer que las células cancerosas absorbieran y almacenaran un compuesto de boro diseñado por el propio Hawthorne.
Cuando las células cancerosas ‘alimentadas’ con el boro fueron expuestas a los neutrones, una partícula subatómica, el átomo de boro, se hizo añicos y desgarró selectivamente las células enfermas sin afectar las células vecinas sanas.
“Con nuestra técnica podemos tratar una gran variedad de tipos de cáncer”, dijo Hawthorne.
