“En enero de 2014 el cometa pasará cerca de la Tierra y la cubrirá de una gran cantidad de polvo cósmico”, aseguró el astrónomo durante una conferencia dedicada al meteorito de Cheliábinsk. “Estas partículas llegarán a la superficie terrestre dentro de unos meses -las más pequeñas dentro de unos cuantos años- y se podrán recoger por todo el planeta”, explicó.
El ISON (C/2012 S1) fue visto por primera vez en septiembre de 2012 por el astrónomo ruso Artiom Novichónok y su colega bielorruso Vitali Nevski por medio de la Red Internacional de Ciencia Óptica (ISON, por sus siglas en inglés), situada cerca de Kislovodsk, en el sur de Rusia.
El cometa, posiblemente el más brillante de la década, brillará tanto que se podrá ver perfectamente desde la Tierra sin dispositivos especiales.
