El tiroteo ocurrió aproximadamente a las 8:20 de la tarde (hora local) del viernes en el Centro de Adoración y Alabanza en Lake Charles. Según la Policía local, un hombre armado entró en la iglesia y disparó contra el pastor Ronald J. Harris “mientras pronunciaba un sermón”. Harris murió en el acto.
