Utilizan cámaras para monitorear la calidad de agua desde arriba, buscando aberraciones como un florecimiento brillante verde azulado de cianobacterias, que pueden producir toxinas nocivas peligrosas. Cuando el grupo detecta algo, un solo drone; de 76,2 centímetros y 1,8 kilogramos, romperá filas, se adentrará a la superficie del agua y sacará una muestra.
El proyecto, llamado Waterfly, fue creado por un equipo de investigadores del MIT que cree que los grupos de drones; volando y trabajando juntos como insectos, son el futuro.
