Barnaby Jack, el ‘hacker’ que afirmaba saber cómo controlar un marcapasos a distancia, ha muerto en su vivienda en San Francisco (Estados Unidos) y sin poder revelar dicho secreto, algo que estaba previsto que hiciera en unos días.
Barnaby, de 36 años de edad, tenía pensado participar en la convención de ‘hackers’ Black Hat la próxima semana, donde revelaría cómo se puede evadir las defensas de estos implantes, pero desgraciadamente falleció antes.
Cuando aún era un empleado de los laboratorios informáticos McAfee, Barnaby realizó un experimento mediante el cual logró controlar una bomba de insulina valiéndose de una antena, a cien metros de distancia. Varios modelos de estas bombas, así como los marcapasos y otros implantes médicos vienen con funciones inalámbricas, lo que permitiría a los ‘hackers’, hacerse con el control de los mismos.
Barnaby se convirtió en una celebridad cuando desveló cómo ‘hackear’ cajeros automáticos (ATM) en la conferencia Black Hat del 2010. Después de dos años de ausencia, nuevamente participaría en dicha conferencia en donde mostraría los fallos en la seguridad que descubrió en marcapasos y desfibriladores y que supuestamente permitirían ‘hackearlos’ introduciéndose en su sistema de comunicación inalámbrica.
El cadáver fue hallado en el apartamento de la víctima en Nob Hill. Las autoridades desconocen las causas de la muerte e indicaron que estas no se sabrán hasta dentro de un mes, cuando se obtengan los resultados de la autopsia.
