“Como los Estados no facilitan información fiable sobre sus volúmenes de pesca, tenemos que expandir nuestra manera de pensar y explorar otras fuentes. Las nuevas tecnologías son capaces de decirnos qué es lo que está pasando realmente en nuestros océanos”, asegura uno de los autores de la investigación, Daniel Pauly.
Para su estudio, los científicos analizaron miles de kilómetros de la costa del golfo Pérsico con ayuda de los mapas de Google Earth. En la investigación detectaron un total de 1.900 instalaciones pesqueras, muchas más de las declarados.
A partir de estos datos, los especialistas canadienses concluyen en un artículo publicado en la revista ‘ICES Journal of Marine Science’ que la captura anual total de los seis países de la región, por ejemplo, en 2005, fue de unas 31.000 toneladas, mientras que para ese mismo año la cifra reportada oficialmente fue seis veces menor: 5.260 toneladas.
