Muchas de las empresas más rentables de Estados Unidos pagaron pocos o casi ningunos impuestos sobre la renta federal entre 2008 y 2012, según un estudio difundido por el grupo de activistas de impuestos Citizens for Tax Justice.
Tras analizar las cuentas de 288 compañías del ranking ‘Fortune 500’, la organización concluye que 26 de estas corporaciones, incluidas Boeing, General Electric y Verizon Communications, no pagaron ningún impuesto sobre la renta federal en ese período de cinco años.
Además, en conjunto estas 288 empresas pagaron una tasa efectiva a la hacienda federal del 19,4%, por debajo del 35% que estipula la ley. Un tercio de ellas pagaron menos del 10%.
El grupo también revela que 111 de las 288 empresas no pagaron ningún impuesto sobre la renta federal en al menos uno de los cinco años que duró la investigación.
Por ejemplo, American Electric Power, que estaba entre 26 empresas que no pagaron ningún impuesto sobre la renta durante esos cinco años, generó 10.000 millones de dólares en ganancias, mientras que recibe 577 millones de dólares en concepto de reembolsosde impuestos, señala el estudio.
“Creemos que la gente debe saber lo que las empresas rentables están pagando o dejando de pagar de impuestos en este país”, dijo Robert McIntyre, director de un centro de investigación en Washington.
Por su parte, algunas de las compañías denunciadas, como GE o Verizon, han criticado este estudio y esgrimen que sí que pagan impuestos.
