El muchacho, Justin Carter, tenía 18 años cuando el febrero pasado a través de la red social entró en una disputa con su amigo que le calificó como “loco”. Carter respondió con lo siguiente: “Voy a disparar en una escuela repleta de niños y comeré sus corazones aun latiendo”. Sus palabras provocaron el interés de una ciudadana de Canadá que, después de hacer una breve pesquisa en Google y verificar que Carter vivía cerca de una escuela, denunció su comportamiento a las autoridades.
El joven fue detenido en febrero, acusado en marzo y se enfrenta a ocho años de cárcel por su comentario. Se espera que el proceso se lleve a cabo en julio.
Mientras tanto, sus padres han puesto en marcha una campaña para salvar a su hijo. El padre dice que la Policía no encontró armas en su casa y sólo confiscaron la computadora del adolescente, que, según él, no era consciente de las implicaciones de sus comentarios en Facebook.
La madre, Jennifer Carter, ha iniciado una petición en el sitio web change.org para “cambiar los criterios de investigación acerca de las leyes que mencionan las amenazas terroristas”. La petición ya ha recolectado 8.118 firmas y necesita otras 6.000.
