Un reciente estudio siguiere que los pacientes diagnosticados con insuficiencia cardíaca pueden seguir tomando alcohol, aunque en pocas cantidades.
Un estudio realizado por especialistas de la Universidad Washington en San Luis señala que para la gente mayor de 65 años diagnosticada con insuficiencia cardíaca, seguir tomando alcohol en cantidad moderada no solo no es dañino, sino que incluso ofrece un beneficio de supervivencia. La investigación fue publicada en la revista JAMA Network Open.
Según recoge el portal Medical Express, el estudio liderado por el cardiólogo David Brown mostró que en promedio la supervivencia para los que tomaron alcohol en cantidades moderadas en comparación con los que se abstuvieron fue de un año más. Se destaca que esta diferencia es estadísticamente significativa.

Según explicó David Brown, “sabemos desde hace tiempo que los efectos tóxicos del consumo excesivo de alcohol pueden contribuir a la insuficiencia cardíaca”.
“En contraste, tenemos datos que muestran que las personas sanas que beben moderadamente parecen tener algo de protección contra la insuficiencia cardíaca a largo plazo, en comparación con los que no beben nada. Pero hubo muy pocos datos que nos ayudaran a hacer recomendaciones a las personas que beben moderadamente y que recién han sido diagnosticadas con insuficiencia cardíaca”, agregó.
Si nunca beben no deben comenzar
Ahora, el nuevo estudio sugirió que tales personas pueden seguir tomando de manera segura una porción de alcohol al día para mujeres y dos para hombres. Las razones de esta relación hasta el momento se desconocen y los investigadores indican que podría deberse a una combinación de factores.
Sin embargo, los autores del estudio indican que eso no significa que los que no beben alcohol deben empezar a hacerlo. “Las personas que desarrollan insuficiencia cardíaca a una edad mayor y nunca beben no deben comenzar a beber”, subrayó el investigador principal.
“Pero las personas que han tomado una o dos bebidas diarias antes de su diagnóstico de insuficiencia cardíaca pueden seguir haciéndolo sin preocuparse de que les esté causando daño. Aun así, esa decisión siempre debe tomarse en consulta con sus médicos”, precisó.
