El lamerse los ojos, una supuesta nueva moda entre los jóvenes japoneses, representa riesgos de salud que inclusive podrían hacer a los estudiantes perder la visión, según expertos.
Según varios blogs del noreste de Asia, incluido Shangaiist, un profesor japonés afirma que entre sus estudiantes han aumentado los casos de infecciones en los ojos, luego de que descubrió que a sus pupilos les gustaba lamerse los ojos.
Aunque la fuente de la información es vaga, y se basa en la afirmación de un supuesto profesor del cual ni se revela su nombre, o en qué escuela trabaja, en Estados Unidos expertos médicos han advertido que dicha práctica podría efectivamente ser la causa de contagios por bacterias.
“Esta es una práctica peligrosa que tiene el potencial de difundir un número de bacterias que residen en la boca al ojo, lo que resulta en infecciones bacterianas tales como conjuntivitis”, afirmó el doctor Robert Glatter, en declaraciones a la televisora CBS.
Otra enfermedad que puede ser transmitida mediante dicha práctica es la clamidia, una bacteria de transmisión sexual, y que puede causar la pérdida de la visión si se llega a transmitir al ojo, según los Centros para el Control de Enfermedades de Estados Unidos.
Además de que la superficie de la lengua puede dañar la cornea por abrasión, se pueden transmitir otras enfermedades de transmisión sexual desde los órganos sexuales a los ojos, como el herpes.
Sea cierto o no que el lamerse los ojos se ha convertido en una tendencia en Japón —la cual es supuestamente atribuida a un video de un grupo musical llamado Born, donde aparecen dos personas realizando dicha práctica—, los médicos también advierten que la cantidad de bacterias de la lengua es estratosférica, en comparación con las que se encuentran en los ojos.
Según el doctor Phillip Rizzuto, vocero de la Academia de Oftalmología de Estados Unidos, es por ello que no se recomienda siquiera compartir pupilentes, declaró al sitio The Huffington Post.
