Expertos occidentales están preocupados por la detección de un objeto desconocido orbitando la Tierra que han bautizado 2014-28E y que -sugieren- podría ser parte de la reanudación del programa soviético ‘Cazador de Satélites’.
“Se trata de una historia que podría remontarse a los tiempos de la Guerra Fría: Un misterioso objeto lanzado por el Ejército ruso está siendo vigilado por las agencias espaciales occidentales, sembrando la incertidumbre sobre la reanudación de un proyecto del Kremlin destinado a destruir satélites”, afirma el diario británico ‘The Financial Times’, haciendo referencia al ya abandonado programa ‘Cazador de satélites’.
Según el diario, la atención de los expertos, astrónomos y de los servicios militares occidentales se centra en la detección de un misterioso movimiento de un objeto sin identificar situado en el espacio y que han bautizado como 2014-28E. Inicialmente, éstos afirmaron que dicho elemento desconocido podría ser parte de desechos espaciales que habrían entrado en órbita a raíz del lanzamiento en mayo de este año de un cohete portador ruso de satélites de comunicación.
“Sea lo que fuere, parece que se trata de una prueba experimental. Puede poseer diversas funciones, tanto civiles como militares”, afirma Patricia Lewis, experta en seguridad espacial y jefa del ‘think-tank’ Chatham House. Un experto ruso explicó a la agencia ‘Interfax’, que Cosmos-2499, como fue denominado en una notificación oficial dirigida por Rusia a la ONU, pesa no más de 50 kilos y que lo más probable es que su objetivo sea “probar algo nuevo”, como “un propulsor en miniatura”. Si el satélite tuviera un propulsor convencional, “podría realizar una cantidad mínima de maniobras”, explica.
Asimismo, otros expertos afirman que podría tratarse de un dispositivo encaminado a lidiar con los desechos espaciales o a reparar y mantener a los satélites que se encuentran en órbita. Uno de ellos, Colin Philp, presupone que la misión del satélite podría ser la limpieza de escombros espaciales. “Existe un problema grande y creciente con los escombros espaciales, y se hacen esfuerzos para contener este problema. Hay acerca de 20.000 objetos de más de 10 centímetros en la órbita baja de la Tierra y, definitivamente, [el satélite ruso] se ve como otra manera de resolver el problema”, explicó en una entrevista a RT en inglés.
Según otro experto, los medios internacionales suelen “pensar lo peor” sobre el satélite por la situación tensa que vive el mundo, debido a la confrontación provocada por el conflicto en Ucrania. “Creo que si esto hubiese pasado en un contexto diferente, las especulaciones serían diferentes”, opina el experto Brian Weeden, citado por el portal ‘Space.com’.
